Brass anklet, worn by women of the Tharu people of southern Nepal. Designed to sit around the top of the foot, this anklet is folded over to form a hollow tube, has a very simple banded decoration at front and sides, and a hollow ring at the back to hang bells or other decorative items from. The tube contains a small metal bead designed to act as a rattle to frighten away snakes and evil spirits. This is an original antique item, dating to the early 1900's, with a rich, worn patina commensurate with its age.
